  Pink Diamonds

Pink diamonds fall into that category of “bling” known as “fancy diamond jewelery.” This is because the term fancy refers to any type of diamond stone that has a color to it that is discernable to the human eye when the stone is in its setting. It is important to note that most diamonds have some kind of color to them and usually it is yellow. Many diamonds also have a gray or blue tint as well. However these colors are subtle and usually only seen through the loupe of a diamond dealer and only really come into play during the grading of the quality of the diamond.

If a diamond’s color can be vividly seen in the stone then it is known as a fancy diamond. Fancy pink diamonds that you see on the fingers of celebrities such Paris Hilton can come in a number of colors if it is a natural diamond. The many hues of pink available are shrimp, shell, violet, fuchsia, strawberry, coral and bubblegum. Many of these diamonds also resemble rubies, which is not surprising as diamonds and rubies are actually from the same family of minerals with diamonds being slightly harder than a ruby.

Of course if you opt for a lab created version of a pink diamond it will be much pinker. Most lab created diamonds are absolutely perfect and come in the same large variety of hues as the natural ones. In fact they may be a little too perfect as in nature it is difficult to find a pink diamond that has uniform color across the entire stone. Even if a uniform color is found a pink diamond might also flash other colors such as orange, brown and purple. Unlike the lab created versions of these gemstones, natural pink diamonds are actually multi-tonal stones. However if you really like the multi-tonal effect you can get lab created gems that have been dipped in a coating that can make the gem flash any color that you like.

The truth is that when it comes to a fancy diamond like a pink diamond its flaws are the best things about it. The more flaws the pink diamond has the deeper its color will likely be as it are the flaws that give the stone any kind of tint in the first place.

Although the purely pink lab created gem might be pretty you must be careful not to be overcharged for it. You also need to watch out for yellow or grey diamonds that have actually been dyed pink. Sometimes diamonds are also heated in order to give them a pink color.

Weirdly pink diamonds made in a laboratory can actually be more expensive than gems found in nature since natural pink diamonds are often just heat-treated brown diamonds. Brown diamonds are the least expensive and lowest graded on the American Gemologist’s scale of diamond quality. A truly flawless pink diamond is actually almost impossible to find in nature and if it were found it would be worth millions.
