The truth is that most true canary diamonds are not as yellow as the ones that are man made. To find a truly canary yellow diamond that is also affordable you might have to look at the ones that are man made. There are many Russian diamond labs that sell these gigantic canary diamonds online both wholesale and retail. The reason that you might want to go for a lab created canary diamond is because it is uncommon to find a natural stone that goes for less then five thousand dollars a carat. Stellar examples of canary stones, like the one Jennifer Lopez owns, goes for as much as $50,000 a carat.
For a couple of hundred years India was the prime producer of natural canary diamonds. However what constituted the color yellow really varied from definition to definition. Yellow could mean a diamond that was almost lime green in color but it could also refer to a gemstone that had a twinkle that was more orange or brown as well.
By 1730 Brazil also became a big producer of yellow diamonds. In 1869 a huge cache of sunflower yellow colored diamonds were also discovered in South Africa. It wasn’t until these bright yellow African diamonds were brought to the surface that the slang word “canary” came to describe yellow diamonds. Yellow diamonds from South African were originally called Cape Diamonds and still are sometimes today.
There is also a certain type of very pale yellow diamond that comes from South Africa that is called Cape White or Cape Yellow. These diamonds have a slightly antique look and are very charming and stately looking when mounted in an engagement ring.
Keep in mind that if you are shopping for yellow diamonds that those known as Cape diamonds are considered to be far more valuable than those known as Canary diamonds. The lighter the tinge of yellow in the diamond the more money it is worth despite the trendy popularity of the straw yellow type of big Brazilian or South African diamond. |
